Yidl With A Fiddle – ייִדל מיטן פֿידל Music Has a Starring Role in Classic Yiddish Films

Illustrated talk (in English) by Miri Koral,
CEO of CIYCL and Continuing Lecturer in Yiddish at UCLA

As soon as sound could be attached to film, Yiddish filmmakers in Poland and the US with an already robust audience for silent film, jumped on the film score bandwagon.
Music became key in the 1930’s, the golden era of classic Yiddish film.

Both distinctly Jewish yet fully modern, film scores ranged from the moody, haunting rhythms of the supernatural Dybbuk to the lively songs in the Molly Picon vehicles Mamele (Little Mother) and Yidl Mitn Fidl (Yiddl With A Fiddle).

Join us for an illuminating fun event showing how melodies and songs were not only entertaining but vital to the Yiddish film narratives about love, longing, and family.
