Yale Strom’s composition SONG OF SONGS will premiere with San Diego Ballet May 24-26 as part of the San Diego Jewish Arts Festival at the Lyceum Theatre.
Featured musicians are: Elizabeth Schwartz – vocals, Alex Greenbaum – cello, Jamie Papish – percussion and Fred Benedetti – guitar.
3 world premieres in one evening! Celebrating a poem beloved by people from all walks of life and beliefs, SONG OF SONGS is a haunting rumination on romantic love. As unique as the piece itself, three distinct ballets (all choreographed by SDB’s Artistic Director), illuminate the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, and inviting each other to truly enjoy and experience life and love.
Song of Songs I features a solo dancer directly responding to a spoken word presentation of the piece. Immediate and intimate.
Song of Songs II features a trio of couples performing to a commissioned score by Yale Strom. Strom said, “My composition reflects both the literal and figurative sensuality that comes through the beautiful poetry in the Song of Songs. The melodic changes range from Middle Eastern to Western while the rhythmic changes go from the more familiar to the exotic.” Strom’s intent is to convey the breadth of the lover’s experience from tender to fiery.
Song of Songs III features a large ensemble dancing to a shimmering and ebullient commissioned score by jazz legend and SDB Resident Composer Charles McPherson.
Get swept away in the lush ecstasy of the moment.
