Jonathan Adelman, Ph.D., a past president of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, died Friday, Oct. 29, SPME announced.

He had served as a professor at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies.  He was the author or editor of twelve books on the Middle East as well as hundreds of opinion pieces for news media on China, Russia, and the Middle East.

A pioneer in Chinese and Russian studies, Adelman was an honorary professor at both Peking University and People’s University of Beijing.  He had lectured around the world and consulted to high-tech firms in Silicon Valley about Russia and China.

Adelman grew up in a Zionist home and was committed to fighting antisemitism.

Asaf Romirowsky, Ph.D, the executive director of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, commented: “We are grateful for his service and dedication to SPME and to the principle that teaching and research on Israel must be honest and follow data and facts.  His scholarship and voice will sorely be missed.”
