In a ceremony at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City on Monday, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt recognized May as Jewish American Heritage Month, joining more than 30 other states to do so.
“As we gather together to celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month, we’re reminded of the values that make our state and our nation great,” the governor said. He added that the state celebrates the contributions of each of the thousands of Jewish Oklahomans.
Gentner Drummond, the state’s attorney general, also spoke at the event. “It was an honor to help celebrate the incredible contributions of Oklahoma’s Jewish American population at the Jewish American Heritage ceremony at the capitol today,” his office tweeted.
The proclamation was a partnership of the governor’s office, the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City and the Combat Antisemitism Movement.
“We are not just Jews, but we’re Jewish Americans, and we’re Jewish Okies,” Rachel Johnson, executive director of the local Jewish Federation, said at the event.
