YAAANA is excited to be offering a 6-week class exploring Yiddish language and culture through literature, music, theater, and film!

This Tuesday (Jan. 16th) is Opening Night and will feature a Yiddish music recital, a Yiddish class demonstration, and a festive dinner. To attend, please RSVP at yaaana.org@gmail.com or 619-719-1776 (this will help us determine how much food to bring!) Dinner, beverages, and the lesson are $10 with a RSVP.

About the classes

Tuesdays, Jan. 16, 23, 30, and Feb. 6, 20, 27 (no class on Feb. 13) from 7-8:30pm at the Lawrence Family JCC

The class series is suitable for people of all ages and denominations and will be conducted at the level of those participating—from beginner through advanced. Every class is scheduled for 90 minutes (7-8:30pm), with the first half of each class devoted to Yiddish culture and the second half to the language itself. Classes will be accompanied by snacks and beverages to allow attendees to mingle and socialize.

About the instructor

Jana Mazurkiewicz Meisarosh is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan. She is working on her dissertation on Yiddish Theater in Communist Warsaw. Originally from Poland, Jana holds an Master of Arts degree in Polish Philology and Jewish Studies from the University of Wrocław. In addition to professional experience in acting, directing, and playwriting, she taught Yiddish as a private tutor. Jana is not only a practicing academic, but also an active theater artist and critic. In October 2017, she moved to San Diego and launched The Yiddish Arts and Academics Association of North America (YAAANA), an institution that promotes Yiddish scholarship, literature, theater, and various genres of music and dance, through community-building events.
