*There are several different terms in Yiddish for this English word. However, although those terms historically had neutral connotations, some of them (including the term “shvartser”) have at times and among certain groups of speakers carried racist undertones and can, unfortunately, still be heard used today in a derogatory manner in both Yiddish and English. Our recommendation to use “afroamerikaner” rather than “shvartser” in this list reflects the desire shared by many in the Yiddishist community to avoid perpetuating the negative connotations that this term has accumulated, as well as a recognition that many Black people find the term hurtful, regardless of the speaker’s intentions. In expanding this concept globally, Black people in other countries may also be called by similar terms: Afro-German, Afro-French, Afro-Italian, and the like.
