The community’s leading humanitarian charity has launched an appeal to help those affected by a deadly earthquake in Mexico claimed more than 200 lives.
World Jewish Relief has initiated an emergency fundraising appeal to support victims of the natural disaster.
The charity is looking to raise money to provide relief such as shelter, emergency accommodation, hygiene kits and essential household items
The earthquake caused havoc in the central American country’s capital of Mexico City, with hundreds reported dead, with thousands in need of humanitarian assistance.
They add, that an estimated 40,000 Jews, most of whom live in Mexico City, may also be affected, and World Jewish Relief will be in contact to assist them after Rosh Hashanah.
Paul Anticoni, World Jewish Relief’s Chief Executive, said: “As we head into Rosh Hashanah, sadly the world is in turmoil once again. Thousands of people have lost everything in Mexico. On the High Holy Days we recite the Unetaneh Tokef prayer which speaks – terrifyingly – about who will die by earthquake. Jewish tradition teaches us that while we can’t stop natural disasters, we can choose how we respond to them. Please help us support the people of Mexico.”
Jewish emergency volunteers from the Israeli search and rescue group ZAKA have been rushed to Mexico to help in the aftermath of a large earthquake that struck on Tuesday evening, killing more than 200 people.
The Orthodox response group mobilised personnel after the quake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter Scale.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it did not know of any Israelis injured in the quake, as a message on the Embassy’s Facebook page asked Israelis in Mexico needing help to contact an emergency operations room.
