Fruma Gallant, the mother of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, died on May 11 at the age of 88.
Fruma, née Segal, was born in Poland and survived World War II and the Holocaust. She was on the Exodus ship as a child. Along with other Exodus refugees, the British deported her to Hamburg, Germany. She arrived in the newly established State of Israel in 1948, and built her life and family in the Jewish state. She was a nurse by profession.
Gallant was set to continue the management of “Operation Shield and Arrow” against Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.
“On behalf of myself, my wife, Sara, and the members of the Likud [Knesset] faction, I send heartfelt condolences to our friend, Minister Yoav Gallant, on the passing of his mother, Fruma,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Fruma’s inspirational story embodies the Zionist vision. She survived the horrors of the Holocaust, made the arduous journey to Israel on board the Exodus and established a splendid family; her son is the defense minister of the State of Israel. May her memory be blessed,” the prime minister said.
