The head of the Blue and White Party Benny Gantz urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign following the indictments issued by Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit earlier.
“Mr. Netanyahu, this country is dear to us and I am sure that it is also dear to you. You have the power to stop this. People of Israel, sitting with Netanyahu in the same government cannot happen. I call on you, Netanyahu, to show responsibility and to resign from you position,” Gantz, who is Netanyahu’s main challenger in the upcoming April elections, said in a statement.
Similarly, Opposition Leader Shelly Yachimovich of Labor said that Netanyahu is “unfit” to serve as prime minister after the indictment and urged Netanyahu to step down.
“As of this sad moment, Netanyahu is fighting for his personal life, is unfit to fight for the lives of the citizens of the state, is unfit to be prime minister and is unfit to even run in the elections,” Yachimovich said in a statement.
The left-wing party Meretz said it would initiate a special Knesset session to discuss the indictment.
“We are talking about a prime minister who is corrupt to the core and who is bending the entire public system for his own personal survival,” said Tamar Zandberg, Meretz’s chairwoman.
