Todd Salovey, Lorraine Thall and June Gottleib are the three local poets to be featured in Jewish Poets—Jewish Voices’ opening program of its 2020-21 season. The virtual event will be streamed on Zoom Tuesday evening, December 8 at 7 p.m. There is no cost for this Astor Judaica Library offering.
Todd Salovey is the well-known assistant director of the San Diego Repertory Theatre and the director of the 26-year old Lipinsky Jewish Arts Festival, now called JFest. In that role, he has commissioned and developed numerous new pieces of music, theatre and dance that have gone on to be performed throughout the world. He has also written pieces himself. His warm smile as he opens every JFest event with “Shalom Aleichem,” is well-known to thousands of local theater-goers.
Salovey is also a long-time faculty member of UCSD’s theatre program, and has held many leadership positions at his congregation, Adat Yeshurun. His poetry writing has been a natural by-product of his creative muse.
Lorraine Judith Thall currently serves as the clergy assistant for Temple Adat Shalom in Poway.
Lorraine was born in Chula Vista. She wrote her first poem when she was nine and it was published in a high school anthology. A recent poem was featured in the San Diego Union-Tribune. She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Music and has been a piano accompanist for various artists and groups. She also has a certificate in graphic design.
June Gottleib was born in Philadelphia and received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan. Thirty Years ago, after practicing as a clinical social worker in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she moved to San Diego. Here, she changed careers, focusing on acting, writing, poetry performance and film. She has authored three plays and has had several poems published.
Following the presentations of the three featured poets, there will be a half-hour of open mic, where Zoom audience members can share their work.
