Barbara Riedel and Sławomir Kruszyński, who toured the museum on Wednesday, were the one millionth and one millionth and first visitor since the museum opened almost three years ago, on 28 October 2014.

They came to Warsaw from Szczecin, north-western Poland, to explore the city’s cultural scene.

They will now be able to travel further afield as, in addition to a permanent admission card to the Warsaw museum, they were presented with an all-expenses-paid trip to Tel Aviv.

The director of the museum, Dariusz Stola, told Polish Radio that people from 113 countries have visited the museum so far.

Last year foreigners accounted for 30 percent of the total, with those from Israel and the United States topping the list, followed by Germans, French, Spaniards and Britons.

This year, he added, has seen a growing number of Israeli visitors.

The POLIN museum documents 1,000 years of history of Polish Jews and their contribution to various aspects of Polish political, economic and cultural life.

It is located at the site of the former Jewish ghetto, just opposite the Monument to the Heroes of the 1943 Jewish Ghetto Uprising.

Earlier this year, the site received the European Museum Academy (EMA) Prize, which is given to organisations, researchers and cultural institutions for creating pioneering museums or conducting studies and projects of European relevance. (mk/pk)
