The Sarasota Jewish Theatre in Florida announced plans to host upcoming readings for three plays it is considering producing.
“‘Newish Jewish Plays’ reflects my commitment to bringing new plays to Sarasota, reflecting the forward movement of the world, our changing values, and the important events and contemporary issues that shape our lives today,” the theater’s artistic director, Carole Kleinburg, told Sarasota Magazine on Wednesday.
A reading of “Dancing on Glass,” written by Gary Morgenstein and directed by Blake Walton, is scheduled for July 15. The story involves “an explosive public case of antisemitism, political bullying and issues of parenting, all triggered by the firing of a Jewish teacher of Israeli-Palestinian studies,” according to the theater.
A July 22 reading of “Original Tenants,” written by Carole Braverman and directed by Steve Black, tells the tale of a daughter visiting her ailing mother in Bensonhurst in the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y.
The final offering in the “Newish Jewish Plays” series will be “We Are the Levinsons” on July 29, written by Wendy Kout and directed by Kleinberg. This play tells a narrative of an adult daughter who returns to live with her newly widowed father.
Tickets cost $12 for each reading or $30 for the series of three.
