Administrators of the Chabad of Penn State, which serves the community’s Jewish population, reported the theft and subsequent damage of the large menorah that stands in front of the East Waring Avenue house.

The menorah was taken sometime overnight on Oct. 27, Chabad co-director Rabbi Hersy Gourarie said in an email. It was reportedly found damaged the next day in front of the Sigma Alpha Mu Jewish fraternity.

Sigma Alpha Mu was also a target of this incident and they have been working closely with Chabad and with the police since the menorah was stolen, Gourarie said.

Gourarie said the incident is “being handled on the highest level” by Penn State faculty, adding, “I would like to commend the university for their strong support and zero tolerance for acts of this nature.”

State College police said the incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police at 234-7150.
