The National Memorial Day for the Genocide of Lithuanian Jews was commemorated in Vilnius on 26 September. A memorial ceremony for the victims of the Genocide of Lithuanian Jews took place at the Paneriai Memorial. The event was attended by top government officials, representatives of the Lithuanian Jewish Community, foreign embassies in Lithuania, state institutions and other guests.
During the event, the Prime Minister of Lithuania Saulius Skvernelis, the Ambassador of Israel Amir Maimon, the Chair of the Jewish Community of Lithuania Faina Kukliansky, and the Signatory of the Independence Act Emanuelis Zingeris gave speeches. The guests laid wreaths and the Jewish prayer for the dead was chanted.
The memorial ceremony was organized by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defence, the Lithuanian Jewish Community, the international Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania, and the Vilnius City Municipality.
Lithuania has designated 23 September as National Memorial Day for the Genocide of the Lithuanian Jews. On 23-24 September, the Vilna Ghetto was liquidated.
