Congress is currently considering bipartisan legislation, the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, which would undermine efforts at the United Nations and other international governmental organizations to boycott Israel.
Three-hundred members of the House and Senate have already announced their co-sponsorship of these important bills, and AIPAC is actively lobbying for their passage. The legislation expands an important law passed in 1977, which bans U.S. companies from complying with foreign government boycotts of Israel, to include boycotts by international governmental organizations like the United Nations or European Union. Opponents of the bill claim it is unconstitutional and violates the First Amendment. Those arguments are factually wrong. Below is a memo we sent to Capitol Hill outlining the facts, explaining the history, and highlighting the truth about this important bipartisan legislation. Please forward this email and share this information with friends and family. You can also share this memo on Facebook and encourage members of Congress to support the bill by clicking here. The Truth about the Israel Anti-Boycott Act The Israel Anti-Boycott Act (S.720 and H.R.1697) expands existing U.S. law to prohibit compliance with anti-Israel boycotts led by international governmental organizations. Arguments that the legislation infringes upon First Amendment rights are incorrect. Nothing in the bill restricts constitutionally-protected free speech. Companies and individuals would remain entirely free to criticize Israel or boycott it on their own volition.
