While most people critical of UNRWA policies devoted time and energy to oppose the renewal of the UNRWA mandate this past week, the Center for Near East Policy Research worked on the assumption that the UNRWA mandate would be renewed.

The center took another approach , dispatching experts on UNRWA policy to brief staff from both sides of the aisle of the US Congress, to brief the US delegation at the UN, and brief senior staff of the UN Secretary General.

The Center for Near East Policy Research presented its latest UNRWA documentary short film, its latest study of UNRWA education, and its list of reasonable requirements for UNRWA schools to live up to values of the United Nations.

Universal response from the US Congress, from the US mission to the UN and from the office of the UN secretary general: Full encouragement for the Center to bring these concerns to donor nations of UNRWA – they are ones who can make or break UNRWA policy:

The real mandate for UNRWA must be to reverse UNRWA indoctrination to believe in the “right of return” by force of arms.

Renewal of the UNRWA mandate must signal an effort to adopt policies conforming with UN principles of peace education.
