Generation Wealth explores the American dream, which it defines as the quest for fame and fortune. This interesting and somewhat distressing documentary written and directed by Lauren Greenfield explores some of the obsessions of modern day society, such as greed, materialism, the desire to be wealthy and famous, and social status. According to this documentary, this is no longer just the American dream. This dream has permeated the whole world. Global capitalism has taken over. Examples of excessive consumption in Russia and China and elsewhere are on display. One of the individuals interviewed claims that global capitalism has destroyed many cultures.
The need for affirmation, recognition, and more “things” also destroys some people’s lives. On display are young people who are not satisfied with their bodies, who suffer anorexia and endanger their life; we see them twenty years on, and for the most part they are still lost souls. We see a financial high flyer who neglected everything (family and relationships) to acquire more money, power, and material possessions. In 2008, he was caught up in the financial meltdown, spent time in prison, and was then deported to his home country of Germany. He is a free man now, but has no relationship with his children.
One of the more interesting aspects of the documentary is how Greenfield looks at her own life and her own family. Greenfield’s mother was a busy anthropologist who spent a fair amount of time in the field and away from her family. Greenfield also talked about the guilt that she felt leaving her infant son to go on a photography expedition. The son talks about his mother constantly being away. Greenfield confronts her mother about her absences. Her mother looks confused at first, and then says with humor, “Well, I’m glad that you brought this up before I died.” They both laugh.
This documentary shines a light on what happens when you forsake all in pursuit of a dream. That dream may be money, power, beauty, influence, knowledge, fame or fortune. When you pursue a dream and ignore the rest of your life, sometimes your life falls apart. This film definitely makes you think. Generation Weatlh opens at the Hillcrest Cinemas in San Diego on Friday, August 3rd.
