As Rosh Hashanah approaches, a unique social enterprise in Israel is offering Jewish Americans the opportunity to support Israel and its olim communities through the purchase of handmade jewelry. Megemeria, a Jerusalem-based jewelry school and social business, empowers Ethiopian olim by training them in the art of jewelry design while helping them integrate into Israeli society.
Founded in 2010 by Orna and Isaac Levy, owners of luxury jewelry brand Yvel, Megemeria was established to provide professional training and employment opportunities to immigrants from Ethiopia. Driven by Isaac Levy’s experience as a young oleh to Israel, the couple created Megemeria as a way to give back to the community and help olim build new careers and futures in Israel.
“At Megemeria, we give our students the skills and tools they need to succeed, both professionally and personally,” Orna and Isaac Levy said in a joint statement. “The program empowers them to create a better future for themselves and their families while contributing to Israeli society.”
The word “megemeria” means “genesis” in Amharic, reflecting the new beginnings that the school offers its students. Since its inception, Megemeria has trained seven classes of Ethiopian olim, providing them with the skills to become professional jewelry designers. The students’ work blends traditional Ethiopian symbols with modern-design elements, and their creations have gained attention worldwide. Graduates of the Megemeria program receive certification in goldsmithing and the opportunity to work within the jewelry industry.
This Rosh Hashanah, Megemeria is inviting customers to purchase meaningful gifts with a purpose. The jewelry collections feature 925 sterling silver and 24k-gold-plated designs, ranging from necklaces inscribed with biblical verses to contemporary Star of David pieces. All proceeds from the sale of Megemeria jewelry are reinvested into the school, funding the training and employment of Ethiopian olim.
“The launch of the ‘I Stand With Israel’ collection has been incredibly meaningful for both our artisans and the broader community,” said the Levys. “This initiative not only supports the victims of the Oct. 7 attacks, but also reminds people of the power of unity and resilience.”
In response to the Oct. 7 attacks Megemeria recently launched the “I Stand With Israel” collection. All profits from this collection are being donated to families affected by the tragic events. The collection features modern interpretations of the Star of David, symbolizing solidarity with Israel during a time of national crisis.
As Jewish communities around the world prepare for Rosh Hashanah, Megemeria offers a way for individuals to support Israel and its olim communities. Each piece of jewelry purchased helps provide critical training, employment and hope for Ethiopian olim, while also contributing to Megemeria’s broader mission of social impact.
