Not your usual summer Yiddish language and culture program
Dear Friends,
Just wanted to let folks know that I will be teaching the ADVANCED CLASS
in the 1st week, starting Mon. June 7, of the YAAANA 2-week summer intensive.
Monday-Thursday, 8-9:30 a.m. PDT (11 a.m. EDT, 4 p.m. in the U.K., 5 p.m. in most of Europe, 6 p.m. in Israel). The second week will be taught by the incomparable Yiddish actor Rafael Goldwaser. The course will focus on autobiographies.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: There is nothing more dramatic than the life of an individual. We will read autobiographical writings, choosing from the memoirs of both male and female memoirists such as Yekhezkl Kotik, Shmerke Kaczerginski, Gina Medem, Kadye Molodowsky Puah Rakovski, Meylekh Ravitsh and others, ranging from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Grammar to be studied will be drawn from these writings.

Sheva Zucker served as editor of the magazine Afn Shvel from 2005 to 2020. She has taught and lectured on Yiddish language, literature and culture on five continents and has taught Yiddish for many years in the Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in NYC. She is the author of the textbooks Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Vols. I & II. She wrote her doctoral dissertation on The Emergence of the Modern Women in Yiddish and Western Literature.
The recording of the event, Sunday, May 23, about the newly discovered female Yiddish writer Salomea Perl (1869-??) and Ruth Murphy’s book The Canvas and other stories by Salomea Perl: a bilingual Yiddish/English edition is now available for viewing, either on Facebook or on Youtube. The event features a bilingual reading by the translator, Ruth Murphy, and myself and a discussion.
