We will talk about the development of the modern Yiddish literary language – what it means, when and where it developed – and take a look at some early Yiddish books. We will also discuss Kerler’s own history, including the evolution of his own writing.

Dov-Ber Kerler (Boris Karlov) was born in Moscow in 1958. He studied linguistics and philology at both Hebrew University and Oxford. Since 2001, he has headed the department of Jewish Studies at Indiana University. He led the Aheym Project, which recorded interviews in Yiddish with the older generation of Jews in Eastern Europe. So far he has written and edited, in Yiddish and English, over 13 research books, stories, or poetry books, anthologies, and periodicals.
