Iranian Ayatollah Mohammad Hassan Akhtari said last week that the normalization agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates was an attempt to stave off the Jewish state’s inevitable demise and save U.S. President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
Speaking to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV on Aug. 29, Akhtari, who heads Iran’s Islamic Revolution Committee for Support of Palestine, called the normalization agreement a “great crime perpetrated by the UAE against the Islamic nation” and “a historic treason.”
The very presence of “the Zionist entity” so close to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz was considered a threat by Tehran, said Akhtari.
“The Islamic Republic believes it has the right to consider this to be a threat,” he said.
“What the UAE did is nothing but a small, stupid and insolent step,” he said, adding that the “accursed measure” was meant to save Israel and came in response to a “plea” from Trump.
