Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 29-year-old Democratic congresswoman from New York, said at a Hanukkah event on Sunday that she has Jewish heritage.
After lighting Hanukkah candles in an event hosted by a Jewish group in Queens, Ocasio-Cortez surprised everybody when she revealed that members of her family were descendants of Jews who were forced to convert to catholicism and flee Spain during the Inquisition in the 15th century.
This is the first time she talks about her Jewish heritage in public. ‘Our destinies are tied beyond our understanding’, she said.
