The Murray Galinson San Diego-Israel Initiative brings together professors and researchers in Israel and San Diego for joint projects. Recently the organization named in honor of the late philanthropist and San Diego Jewish community leader Murray Galinson listed four of these projects in an email advisory.

SDSU and Technion Joint Engineering Capstone Project
SDSU and Technion senior students worked together over Skype and Facebook for a year on a joint aeronautical engineering design capstone project. Under the direction of Professors Joseph Katz (SDSU) and Gil Yudilevitch (Technion), the teams of five students from each school worked together to develop an unmanned aerial vehicle. In May, the Technion students visited SDSU to finalize and test their project. This unique opportunity allowed for exposure to their respective high tech industries’ practices and processes as well as cultures, with the hope of building and maintaining long-term relationships. Plans are underway to build upon this project for next academic year.

Joint UC San Diego Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology – University of Haifa Project
Professor Tom Levy of UCSD and Professor Assaf Yasur-Landau of University Haifa began investigating the impact of long term climate change and rising sea levels on the cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean – along the coast of Israel. This summer 12 UCSD students will join their Israeli counterparts, using Israeli innovative technology to study human adaptation and the keys to understanding current climate change and rising sea levels.

Joint University Partnership Between USD’s Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering and Azrieli College of Engineering
Following a MGSDII funded research trip to Israel, USD Engineering Dean Chell Roberts and Professor Frank Jacobitz began collaborations with their colleagues at Azrieli College of Engineering. A second trip has already been completed, fine tuning the first ever modern Israel course on water technology and innovation to be offered at USD. The hope is for the entire USD class to visit Israel and their Azrieli student counterparts at the end of this coming academic year.

MGSDII Brings San Diego Community to Experience the 2017 Jerusalem Biennale
Twenty-three San Diegans and “Professor in Residence,” UCSD’s Allan Havis, joined Biennale founder Rami Ozeri and were welcomed by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat for a very special week long art tour. This highly curated trip featured visits to the homes of Israeli collectors, artists’ workshops, and a behind the scenes VIP visit to the world-renowned Israel Museum, led by chief curator of Israeli Art, Dr. Amitai Mendelson. Rami will be taking the Jerusalem Biennale on the road, visiting San Diego for interactive art experiences this October.
