Jewish philanthropist, Republican billionaire donor and Las Vegas Sands Corp. founder and CEO Sheldon Adelson has been undergoing cancer treatment and not been at his firm’s office since the end of December, said one of the company’s lawyers during a court hearing in a longtime case brought by a Hong Kong businessman.

James Jimmerson told the court on Monday that he heard last month “of the dire nature of Mr. Adelson’s condition, health.” The remark occurred when talking about whether Adelson could sit for a deposition in the case.

Adelson’s business told the Associated Press on Thursday that he has cancer.

“Mr. Adelson is still dealing with certain side effects from medication he is taking for the treatment of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” said company spokesperson. “These side effects have restricted his availability to travel or keep regular office hours.”

Adelson is expected to return to work after completing treatment.

He and his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, are stalwart supporters of the State of Israel and numerous Jewish causes.

The Adelsons donated $30 million towards U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. They gave $100 million for Republican campaigns in the 2018 midterms.

They also invested in Israel’s recently launched unmanned spacecraft to the moon, making it the fourth country to launch a lunar spacecraft after the United States. Russia and China.

Miriam Adelson was honored in November with the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the United States’ highest civilian honor.
