The American Jewish Congress stands with Antonio Ledezma, Mayor in Caracas, in these troubled times for him and Venezuela. We demand his immediate release following his arrest today.
Since February 2015 he has been accused and detained for allegedly plotting a coup against the country’s government. Yet, in light of the lack of substantive proofs for such claims, it is clear that the arrest of Antonio Ledezma is just a tool to stop dissent and limit the freedom of expression in Venezuela.
Mayor Ledezma attended our International Mayors Conference in Israel in 2012. In that event, we got to know a hardworking Venezuelan who was as much committed to improve the life of his citizens, as he was to raise his voice in front of abuses of power and rights’ violations.
Antonio Ledezma believes in a diverse and inclusive society that respects the individual and political rights of every citizen. His devotion to these values should be embraced by local and national leaders, not only in Venezuela, but all around the world. Instead of being praised for his principles, Mr. Ledezma is facing a disdainful detainment.
The American Jewish Congress has been monitoring this case since its early stages. Mayor Ledezma embraces all the values that we try to promote and we will be vocal until he is released and freed from all the unjustified charges.
Please join us in our support for Mayor Ledezma!
