Gunshots were fired from Syria at an Israeli drone Thursday night and missed their target, instead hitting a house in the town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, according to the Israel Defense Forces.
No injuries were reported, but the house suffered light damage. Israel alleged that the drone was in Israeli airspace at the time of the attack. The pro-Assad news outlet Al-Mayadeen asserted that the drone was flying near the Syrian village of Hader, close to the border with Israel.
Majdal Shams is a Druze town that was once part of Syria and is home to many sympathizers of Syrian dictator President Bashar al-Assad. Unlike the situation in some other Druze communities that maintain an active and patriotic role in the IDF and other Israeli state institutions, in Majdal Shams there are many residents who do not support Israeli sovereignty in the area.
The attack came just one day after Syria’s army accused Israel of bombing the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center, an institution near Damascus that is suspected of developing chemical weapons for Assad as well as weapons for the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.
